Malleswari was born in 1975 at Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. - She is the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal,a bronze medal for weightlifting (69kg) in the 2000 Summer Olympics at Sydney.
- She is a recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award (1995-96), India's highest sporting honour and Padma Shri in 1999.
