About Reserve Bank of India


The Reserve Bank of India is India's central banking institution, which controls the monetary policy of the Indian rupee. It was established on 1 April 1935 during the British Raj in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The share capital was divided into shares of Rs 100 each fully paid, which was entirely owned by private shareholders in the beginning. After India's independence in 1947, the Reserve Bank of India was nationalised in 1949. . The general superintendence and direction of the RBI is entrusted with the 21-member-strong Central Board of Directors—the Governor (currently Duvvuri Subbarao), four Deputy Governors, two Finance Ministry representative, ten government-nominated directors to represent important elements from India's economy, and four directors to represent local boards headquartered at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and New Delhi.

The Notification for Combined Defence Services 2 or CDS Examination 2 is just published by the UPSC for recruitment into the Officers Training Academy, Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. China has indicated it will go ahead with building transport corridor in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir despite India’s concerns, signing a MoU with Pakistan on a transport corridor expected to pass through the disputed region. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang wrapped up a 2 day visit to Pakistan following his trip to India, called on both countries to “start formulating a long-term plan for the China-Pakistan economic corridor project and gradually push forward its construction”. Chinese planners have called for a transport and economic corridor to link China’s far-western Xinjiang region to the port of Gwadar, on the Arabian Sea, which China helped build and is now managing.

Classical status for Malayalam


Malayalam’s long wait for classical status is over. The Union Cabinet decided to grant the coveted recognition to the language, spoken by 3.33 crore Malayalis all over the world. Malayalam now joins Tamil, Kannada and Telugu, all members of the Dravidian linguistic family, as the fourth ‘classical’ language of South India. The decision, it has been clarified by the Ministry of Culture, would be subject to the final decision on a writ petition pending before the Madras High Court. The decision would result in the State getting Rs.100 crore in assistance from the Centre and support for various projects to promote the language and its literature. Furthermore, the University Grants Commission (UGC) would back the establishment of Malayalam Chair at various Central universities.

Facebook joined Web freedom group GNI


Facebook became a full member of the Global Network Initiative, a non-governmental organisation promoting Internet freedom and privacy rights. The announcement came one year after the world’s biggest social network gained observer status at GNI, whose corporate members include Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google. Facebook Vice President Elliot Schrage said the California company joined the group as part of its commitment to “advancing human rights, including freedom of expression and the right to communicate freely.” “We’re pleased to join GNI and contribute to its efforts to shed a spotlight on government practices that threaten the economic, social and political benefits the Internet provides.”

Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission of Kenya


Kenya’s Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission has stated, security forces and judiciary should publicly apologise for abuses going back 50 years, its final report seen on this week. Set up after bloody post-election violence in 2007-08, Kenya’s Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) handed over its weighty four-volume report — containing huge number of testimonies gathered over four years detailing rights abuses in the country — to President Uhuru Kenyatta. Mr. Kenyatta and Vice-President William Ruto are named in the report for allegedly planning and financing violence during the post-election unrest, though the commission recommends no action be taken against them as they are awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court on similar charges.

Yahoo is buying blogging network Tumblr


Yahoo is buying blogging network Tumblr for about $1.1 billion as CEO Marissa Mayer seeks to lure users and advertisers with her priciest acquisition to date. Tumblr, headquartered in New York, will continue to host its more than 108 million blogs, while CEO and founder David Karp, 26, will remain in charge of the website. Mayer, CEO of the biggest US Web portal since July, is betting that Tumblr will help transform Yahoo into a hip destination in the era of social networking as she challenges Google and Facebook in the $17.7 billion display ad market. Adding Tumblr is expected to expand Yahoo's audience by 50% to more than 1 billion monthly visitors, and increase traffic by about 20%.

First Indian amputee scales Mount Everest


Arunima Sinha, a former national level volleyball player, who had lost her right leg after thrown off a moving train by some hoodlums, created history today by becoming the first Indian amputee to conquer Mount Everest. 25-year-old Sinha reached the summit of the highest peak in the world at 10.55 am today, as a member of the Eco Everest Expedition from the Tata Group. Arunima Sinha from Uttar Pradesh, was pushed out of the general compartment of Padmawati Express for resisting a chain-snatching attempt by some criminals, while travelling from Lucknow to Delhi on April 12, 2011. She was hit by a passing train and was seriously injured. She was hospitalised with serious leg and pelvic injuries and in a bid to save her life, doctors had to amputate her left leg below the knee.

Asked about what kind of defence assistance Afghanistan was looking to get from India, Afghanistan’s ambassador to India Shaida Mohammad Abdali said, “The partnership agreement does not distinguish between lethal and non-lethal (military equipment).

Studies confirm that there is reduction in the live coral cover and increase in rubbles, macro-algae and calcareous algae which indicate continuing degradation of these reefs. The Government seeks to protect, sustain and augment mangroves and coral reef in the country by both regulatory and promotional measures. Under the regulatory measures, the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification (2011) and the Island Protection Zone (IPZ) Notification 2011 regulates the development activities along the Sea coast and tidal influenced water bodies.
